When purchasing a diamond, the most important consideration should be given to the shaping of the diamond by the cutter, commonly referred to as "the cut." 

The second consideration should be the color with measurements known as "High Whites D, E, F, and G" being the most desirable.  H, I, and J measurements in High Whites can also be highly valuable in symmetrically cut diamonds. 

The third consideration should be the clarity number and characteristics of the imperfections in the stone, which are graded as VVS1, VVS2, VS1, and VS2. 

The best quality-for-price diamonds are that graded SI1, SI2 or SI3.

In recent years, the diamond market has been flooded with manipulated or treated diamonds.  They are marketed as "enhanced," beautified" and other terms.
